Two applications to Fenland Council – one approved and one under consideration – reflect changes and changed attitudes to town centre retailing.

A Whittlesey man wants to turn an empty shop in March – once a boutique – into a family arcade.

Simon Plitsch says in his application to Fenland District Council planners that he wants to open it non-gambling family venue.

“Changing the use from retail to suis generis we will be bringing in something different for the town, for the kids to attend and for families, rather than going out of town,” he says.

“This will possibly then bring in extra income into the town and other stores.”

The council has recently agreed for Dominic Seims to open a gaming centre nearby, at 4a Dartford Road.

Planners said 4a Dartford Road is currently a music shop.

“However details provided with the application suggest that the proprietor is due to retire shortly,” says a summary by planners.

“And rather than see the store vacant, he (Mr Seims) seeks to offer this to his son who has experience with running Adult Gaming Centres.

“Thus, the proposal seeks to retain a viable business premises open in the town centre of March.”
