“While two of our response officers were patrolling Whittlesey on their night shift in the early hours of this morning, a black Audi A3 drew their attention after spotting it speeding in Bellmans Road,” says a police report.
“The driver was stopped nearby and unluckily for him, after his details were run through the Police National Computer (PNC).
“It flagged as him being wanted on a European Arrest Warrant for human trafficking offences in Belgium.
“One in custody to be handed over to the relevant authorities.”
The suspect is heard telling police ‘they want me? about what?’ before being advised of his rights and bundled into a police van.
He is at Kings Police Investigation Centre before police decide the next stage.
That could be engaging a lawyer to contest the warrant.
An early court appearance will decide preliminary stages – if extradition is contested the legal process will kick in and the suspect could be granted bail.
One legal firm that advises on international warrants said that “it is key to identify the issues in the case early on, which could be on Human Rights, technical or procedural grounds”.
