New footways, cycleways and pedestrian crossings have been delivered alongside new cycle parking to make it safer and easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle to the shops and businesses in Mitcham’s Corner, Cambridge.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), was joined by ward councillors yesterday (Thursday) to mark the completion of works – a key milestone in the GCP’s Milton Road project.

The upgrades have been delivered as part of the GCP’s Milton Road project to improve bus, bike and walking journeys along a key route into and out of the city centre.

Cllr Meschini said: “The improvements that have been made to Mitcham’s Corner mean it is now safer and easier for people to walk and cycle to support the shops and businesses that are here, as well as providing better connections to the city centre and nearby employment sites.

“Work on the rest Milton Road project continues to make good progress and once complete, this scheme will deliver better bus journeys and safer active travel trips to encourage more people to bus, walk and cycle to work, school and meet friends.”

Community leaders have been celebrating better and safer journeys for people travelling in and around Mitcham’s Corner.

Cllr Gerri Bird, county councillor for Chesterton, said: “People who use Milton Road every day have long championed for it to be improved, and I am delighted to see the upgrades have been made at Mitcham’s Corner by the GCP.

“We can’t wait for the wider work to be completed, which will transform people’s daily journeys along Milton Road which is such a key route in and out of our city.”

A new CYCLOPS junction at King’s Hedges is nearing completion, with the final surfacing and lining of the road to be carried out before it becomes fully operational later this summer.

It will become the second CYCLOPS junction in Cambridge following on from the junction delivered as part of the GCP’s award-winning Histon Road scheme. The CYCLOPS has proven to be popular within the community as it provides additional segregation for pedestrians and cyclists from motorised traffic to provide safer journeys for all road users.

Most of the Copenhagen-style crossings have also been delivered, with just three of the 14 junctions left to complete. These junctions provide dedicated crossing points to improve safety for all road users alongside new links to encourage more people to walk, wheel or cycle.
