Independent candidate Vivienne Hitchin snatched an extraordinary victory in a local by election yesterday (Thursday) with an impressive 73 per cent of voters supporting her. The by election to represent Eaton Ford on St Neots Town Council was caused by the resignation of Bob Farrer.

Vivienne Hitchin secured 503 votes, with Labour candidate Zofia Lumley in second place with 106 votes.

Green candidate Brian Moore came in third with 44 votes, with a second independent, Wayne Morris propping up the others with just 35 votes. The turn out was 16.46 per cent.

Ms Hitchin had told voters ahead of the poll: “I’m not a member of a political party, I do not have Party backing or funding, and I do live in Eaton Ford.

“I have spent the past four weeks delivering information about me to over 2,000 homes in Eaton Ford and listening to residents as to what they want the Council to do.

“I particularly care about the appearance of Eaton Ford and how our town has become overgrown with weeds as a result of the county councils’ ‘green’ policy and how these block water running to gullies and drains creating a higher risk of floods.”

She added: “I am also concerned at the consequences of Huntingdonshire District Council’s ‘green’ decision to charge for garden waste bins collection. Either residents have to pay the extra charge or drive through our already congested High Street to get to the tip.
