Ely Cathedral has been forced to close to visitors today (August 14) after a mishap yesterday when lighting equipment fell over and damaged the floor. However, the Stained Glass Museum and the Cathedral shop will stay open.

And St Catherine’s Chapel will remain accessible for those wanting to come in for silent prayer and reflection, and daily services will continue as normal.

“We are sorry that we are unable to welcome sightseeing visitors today,” said a cathedral statement.

“Yesterday evening, some lifting equipment for our lighting project proved too heavy for the floor which was impaired, and the equipment become stuck and fell over.

“Although there has been some damage to the fabric we are thankful that nobody was hurt.

“We are therefore closed for general visiting today, Wednesday 14 August, while we make things safe and carefully record the incident.

“We’re very grateful to our lighting project team for their careful response to this incident.”
