Driver lucky to be alive say villagers after crash at Guyhirn near Wisbech

Villagers believe a gate and a concrete posts averted more serious injuries after last night after two cars crashed in Guyhirn near Wisbech. The crash happened at Selwyn Corner and one car left the road and ended up on top of the river bank.

Police confirmed two people were taken to hospital for checks, but no one is thought to have been seriously injured.

One resident posted to the Policing Fenland Facebook page that he lives a few houses down from where the crash happened.

“I was there maybe 3 mins after it happened,” he wrote. “If the gate and concrete posts hadn’t been there to slow him down he’d have gone into the river.

“A driver was unconscious for a couple of mins according to the first people there so that would have been it for him. The family in the other car seemed ok. Both cars a write off though.”.

Another resident said: “The gate and concrete posts saved his life for sure. You can see how much energy they absorbed; they were bent up like they were made of plasticine.

“That was steel and reinforced concrete.”

The Fenland Response Team, Wisbech Neighbourhood Policing Team, Cambs Fire and Rescue and the East of England Ambulance Service attended.

Police said enquiries continue.

They appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to please call 101 and quote CAD 327 of 05.02.24.

Another resident added: “I saw this minutes after it happened. However they escaped with just checks at hospital is beyond me. Very very lucky.”
