They counted them out – and they counted them in. Slowly. It was a day not for pace but more for perseverance for the annual ‘outing’ by the Wisbech and District Historic Vehicle Club Road Run began and ended in Wisbech.

But not before a multitude of classic vehicles – from lorries to buses, from cars to motorbikes – weaved their way through the Cambridgeshire countryside, into Lincolnshire and back again to Cambridgeshire.

En route were the towns and villages of the Fens to explore – albeit briefly – prior to a ‘refreshment’ break at Peterborough (effectively a stock take) and then onwards for the return to Wisbech.

The club is familiar with what’s required for apart from the year of Covid, has been organising the event for three decades – this was indeed the 30th time the road run had taken place. The club describes it as a ‘cavalcade of classic vehicles’ and the enthusiasm of those taking part was evident to the many spectators who glimpsed them on their epic outing.

Those taking part had only fully known for certain the road run would take place as organisers explained ahead of the rally they normally tried to publish full details in April but were late doing so this year.

Not because of any lack of enthusiasm on their part.

“Whilst we’d normally begin advertising in April, this year there was a much larger external emphasis on paperwork and health and safety which delayed us by several months,” a club official explained.“This seems to have been the case for many events across the country, and we are very grateful to have been given permission to carry out the event as planned.

“To help ensure that we can continue to deliver the event in future years, your assistance in sticking to the advertised speed limits, parking in the designated areas, and following the instructions of our volunteer marshals on the day will be greatly appreciated.”

The route took from the start at Somers Road car park in Wisbech before the pause at Lynch Wood Peterborough and then culminating in prize giving back at the Somers Road car park.

Any classic or historic car, commercial vehicle or motorbike was invited to enter – the only condition being their pride and joy is aged 25 years or older.

Proceeds from the day will be totted up and added to the £10,000 raised over the years for charity.

But it is taking the part that really count, even though not all made it back to Wisbech.

“We made it to Peterborough, didn’t quite make it back all the way, but had a superb day,” one participant posted to social media, adding that “commercials were amazing! “Credit must go to all those involved in organising – thank you”.Another added; “What a brilliant day for the 30th Road Run, very enjoyable. “Many of those lorries were absolutely superb, as good as any high end classic car restoration.”

Wisbech & District Historic Vehicle Club describes itself as “as small club of old vehicle enthusiasts and welcome everyone with any interest in old vehicles.

“You don’t have to own one just be interested enough to pay our extortionate membership fees!”
