A young player died yesterday (Saturday) during a home game at Wisbech Rugby Club.

Woodbridge RUF posted: “The sport we love can be so cruel, prayers to the family and club,” was one of hundreds of tributes tonight from across East Anglia and the rest of the country.

The Wisbech team were at home to Diss Rugby Club 1XV whose Facebook page was inundated tonight with tributes after the match, of course, was abandoned.

One spectator posted: “Rugby is the best game in the world, the respect and the sportsmanship is something you never see in any other sport out there, but to watch Wisbech 1st team play today, a club I love and to see a young die on the pitch from a 50/50 challenge is one of the hardest things I have ever seen.

“It puts the physicality of the game in perspective; we all love the game, but today the game has lost a great young player, and our thoughts go out to his family.”

The tributes were piling in thick and fast.

“Heartfelt condolences from myself and Huntingdon Rugby Club. Our thoughts are with everyone involved today, players, supporters, and families. Incredibly sad news, “said one.
