A wave of Alzheimer’s Society fundraisers turned Cambridge blue on Saturday 23 September, at the charity’s Memory Walk, to help end the devastation caused by dementia. The walk has already raised over £68,000, with more funds expected in the coming weeks.

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, with one in three people born in the UK today going on to develop the condition in their lifetime.

Alzheimer’s Society is vowing to help stop the devastation caused by dementia, with money raised from the family-friendly sponsored walks going towards funding crucial research and supporting people living with dementia through some of the hardest and most frightening times.

Natalie Skipper, Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser, said: “We are in awe of our incredible fundraisers, who turned out in their hundreds to support the over 9,300 people living with dementia across Cambridgeshire.”

  • Alzheimer’s Society is a vital source of support and a powerful force for change for everyone affected by dementia. We provide help and hope.
  • Dementia devastates lives. Alzheimer’s Society research shows that 900,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia. By 2025, 1 million people will be living with the condition in the UK, and many millions more carers, partners, families, and friends are affected.
  • Dementia deaths are rising year on year and 225,000 will develop dementia this year – that’s one every three minutes.
  • Too many face dementia alone. Alzheimer’s Society wants everyone affected by dementia to know that whoever they are, whatever they’re going through, they can turn to us for expert support through practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the best next step.
  • Alzheimer’s Society is the only UK dementia research charity to fund both biomedical and care research, funding research in dementia diagnosis, treatment, and care, and is a funding partner of the UK Dementia Research Institute.
  • We will not rest until people living with dementia and their carers live more fulfilled and less fearful lives, free from stigma and inequality.
  • Alzheimer’s Society offers friendly support through a range of virtual and in-person services, including our Dementia Connect support line (0333 150 3456), our online forum Talking Point, and Dementia Advisers.
