On the eve of Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral, Peterborough aired its love, support, and thanksgiving for her life.

On Sunday, CambsNewsOnline spoke to many people in the city centre, some last-minute shopping to ensure Monday was clear, others noting the somber and reflective tone.

“It’s the end of an era,” said one man. “We are not going to see another queen in our lifetime; it will be kings all the way.”

A majority felt Peterborough had played its part during a period of national mourning.

“People have been quite respectful,” said one resident.

Another said: “It’s all very sad and very difficult but Peterborough has paid its respects.”

One man told us his family had been to London to join the queue lined up to file past her Majesty’s coffin.

“We joined the queue at 10.18am and exited Westminster Hall and 11 hours and 7 minutes later; it was quite an emotional day.

“But we are so proud to have done just one of those things I felt we had to do.”

One woman told us she works for the NHS and had been given the option of taking the day off. She decided she wanted to, noting that her “manager supported me to have the day off. I have always done my best for the NHS.”

One veteran, however, felt the city could have done more.

“We’ve turned up this afternoon to do some sort of appreciation for the Queen; no one else seems to have done anything so the veterans did,” he said.

On Monday Peterborough Cathedral live streams, the funeral service.

All are welcome.

“These moments happen only once in history,” added another resident.
