Ely Cathedral offers a job that’s definitely not for the faint hearted

A job with echoes of the Grand Old Duke of York – who marched his men to the top of the hill only to march them down again – is being offered by Ely Cathedral.

The cathedral wants tour leaders to lead tourists up the 288 steps of the 66-metre (217 ft) high West Tower and to take them down again.

And, of course, depending how long each tour lasts to do this “multiple times each shift”.

It is not a job for the faint hearted.

The cathedral is offering a modest £10.90 an hour for the job but says the reward is also seeing “stunning views over the cathedral, city and surrounding Fens”.

Part time, weekend shifts (3 hours) every other Sunday are on offer although the cathedral says the role is initially just seasonal cover until end of September.

“This is a new and exciting position to join our friendly Visitor Experience team here at Ely Cathedral, leading our West Tower tours,” says the job advertisement.

It goes without saying, although the cathedral makes it clear, that “the ideal candidate should be physically fit, as the role involves ascending and descending the tower multiple times each shift.

“They should also have excellent customer service skills and be an engaging communicator.

“Knowledge of first aid and health and safety would be an advantage, but not essential as full training will be given.”

If you want the job, be quick.
