WATCH: Recovery under way after lorry overturns on busy A142 roundabout at Witchford, Ely
Cambridgeshire fire and rescue were first on the scene
Masked recovery workers were called to carefully check and help to remove the contents of a lorry that overturned on the Witchford roundabout on the A142 near Ely, spilling its load. Traffic has been held up for much of the day after the incident happened during the rush hour just before 9am today.
The roundabout links the A142 and Witchford Road and traffic has been diverted the opposite way round the roundabout to allow cars and lorries to pass.
The driver of the lorry escaped injury, but fire crews were at the scene early as a precaution.
A detailed examination of the contents of the waste being carried by the lorry is under way.
A police spokesperson said: “We were called at about 8.40am today with reports an HGV had overturned on the A142 near Witchford. The incident happened at the roundabout linking the A142 and Witchford Road, with the vehicle shedding its load on the road.”
The spillage has caused delays throughout the day.
Cambridgeshire fire and rescue were first on the scene and drivers caught up in queues say their officers have been directing traffic until police arrive.
“Major incident – over turned lorry at Witchford roundabout material and oil over the road,” said one driver forced to abandon their car and walk into work on the estate,
“They have closed the roads coming out of Lancaster Way and you can’t get through into Ely so I would advise not to come this way.
“Lots of traffic building up looks like it’s going to take a long time to clear
