A plain clothes police officer has re-lived the moment he spotted a probable drug deal taking place and ran after the suspect.

“The officer grabbed the 22-year-old and identified himself as police, but the man ran off,” said a police spokesperson.

“After a 10-minute foot and bike chase, the drug dealer was arrested on Parker’s Piece, Cambridge.

Police officers from the Cambridge neighbourhood team were carrying out plain clothed patrols in the city on 17 April when they spotted Zecaria Gomes-Pais carrying out a suspected drug deal in the Grafton Centre car park.

“Once he was safely in a cell, the team retraced their steps to recover the mobile phone and jacket containing £220 in cash, heroin and cocaine, which he discarded during the chase.”

The ‘finale’ was played out at Cambridge Court.

The court heard that the chase after the suspect began when officers from the Cambridge neighbourhood team were carrying out plain clothed patrols in the city on 17 April when they spotted Zecaria Gomes-Pais carrying out a suspected drug deal in the Grafton Centre car park.

At Peterborough Crown Court on Friday (25 August), Gomes-Pais, of Stanningley Road, Leeds, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison after previously pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and heroin.

PC Rob Tindall, from the Cambridge neighbourhood team, said: “Officers acted on their instincts and as a result, another drug dealer has been removed from our community.

“Drugs bring misery and violence to our communities, and we will continue to put those responsible before the courts.”
